The Navajo indiginous people of the United States believe that every illness has a lesson to teach and the Shaman would traditionally go through every aspect of one’s life up to the event to try to learn from this. From what I can tell, gaining meaning to something that cannot so easily be resolved is important. Making meaning of any illness is very likely an important part of health that I feel Conventional Medicine fails at. To me, its focus is so often a negative one, rather than looking at the illness or challenge positively and what can be done to come out of the event better for it, having learned a lesson. Sometimes, I think the rapid advancement in therapy using science leaves behind a little humanity and the art of medicine from those days long gone. Francis Peabody in 1926 addressed Harvard and states famously, “One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient.”
